RegitzMauck PLLC, a new intellectual property boutique launched by veterans of a prominent international law firm, opened in Dallas last month to provide tailored solutions to clients seeking effective (and cost-effective) legal representation in intellectual property matters and disputes. Attorneys Mike Regitz and Dustin Mauck are embracing new technologies, legal outsourcing solutions, and alternative fee arrangements to ensure that there is a reasonable correlation between client objectives and the costs of the legal services delivered.
“Costs associated with intellectual property litigation have exploded in recent years, and a significant portion of those costs can fairly be attributed to legacy systems, practices, and habits that are not sufficiently aligned with client objectives,” says Regitz. “When representing a client, we continually ask ourselves this question: Is what we are doing providing value to the client? If the answer is ‘no,’ we shouldn’t be doing it, and the client certainly shouldn’t be charged for it.”
The benefits associated with starting a law firm from scratch with the spectrum of tools available today are undeniable, says Mauck.
“By immediately implementing the latest technology from a computing and telecommunications standpoint, we were able to begin serving clients from Day One. Having learned our trade at one of the most well-respected law firms in the world, we provide services that are attractive to clients who recognize that high quality legal representation does not necessarily have to come at a high price.”
Regitz and Mauck, both formerly of Norton Rose Fulbright, recognized early on that third-party solutions can be invaluable in reducing overall costs to the client. Whether it is document management services, cloud-based IT solutions, or contract lawyer utilization, being able to efficiently deploy available resources can have a profound impact on client costs, as can properly constructed fee solutions.
“Whether clients are billed by the hour or using an alternative fee arrangement, there is no single right way to bill for legal services,” says Regitz. “Every situation is different. Every client is different. There are various ways to deliver high quality legal services at a reasonable price. The problem arises when the economic interests of the lawyer and the client diverge. That’s where our flexibility and willingness to thoughtfully explore different fee arrangements can make the difference to discerning clients.”
Regitz and Mauck are graduates of the SMU Dedman School of law and spent a combined 20 years handling intellectual property matters prior to founding RegitzMauck PLLC. They are registered to practice at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and have been named to the 2015 “Texas Rising Stars” list published by Super Lawyers.
